I’m hoping to include various snippets of technical information that will be of use to people, either related to my work (as a Security Specialist with IBM) or else related to my hobby projects (such as MythTV). So here goes with a fairly trivial point, but it slowed me down for a while, so it might be of use to someone out there…
I’ve been playing with one of my IBM Security Access Manager (ISAM) virtual appliances, and have been reminded of the difference between a new release and a fix pack. I wanted to upgrade my 8.0.1.0. ISAM virtual appliance to the latest firmware, which (when I hit this problem) was 8.0.1-ISS-WGA-FP0003 plus Interim Fix 8.0.1.3-ISS-WGA-IF0001.
So first of all I downloaded 8.0.1-ISS-WGA-FP0003 (as isam_8.0.1.3_20150625-1207.pkg), and attempted to install it – but when I went to the web console I made the mistake of clicking Manage System Settings -> Updates and Licensing: Fix Packs. I clicked New, browsed to the .pkg file and clicked Save Configuration. But once the upload reached 100% I was greeted with a System Error message The system failed to install the fix pack.
Once I realised that I should have clicked Manage System Settings -> Updates and Licensing: Available Updates I was able to Upload and then Install the new firmware within minutes.
Then when it comes to installing Interim Fix 8.0.1.3-ISS-WGA-IF0001 (which downloads as 8013_IF1.fixpack) it’s worth knowing that this is the sequence of events: select Manage System Settings -> Updates and Licensing: Fix Packs, click New, browse for the fix pack and click Save Configuration. After that the fix pack is uploaded and installed all in one step: the browser will appear to hang for a minute or so, and after that it will show a notification that the Fix Pack has been installed. If you then re-load the URL it will then show the fix pack name and status. Then the appliance is automatically rebooted after applying the fix pack.
I hope that this is of interest to someone out there!
